Barista Course
Barista Work Experience
For the last 8 weeks 18 of us have been doing a Barista Course in the 9th Degree Café in town. we learned about the history of coffee and the different types of coffee. When we first started making coffee we perfected the coffee shot the key to a god coffee. Next we learned how to nicely froth the milk and how to do a heart. This course was highly beneficial and has been helpful in my job as a waitress in Tinakilly.
On Saturday I did work experience in the Dublin Barista School on South Anne Street from 10-1. During this time I learned how to work the till, so for the first hour I helped at the till as it was very busy! After my break I got to practise some coffee shots and learn about how to make the different types of coffees. In the last hour I got to practise more milk and also got to try latte art, I managed to do a successful heart!
Kairos
On the 13th of October we got the wonderful opportunity to go to Kairos. We did this as part of our form and planned it in English class. It gave us the chance to create a television show, we got to act edit and direct! After many heated discussions with ideas coming from everywhere we decided to go with the iconic Jeremey Kyle show the next difficulty was to decide what we were going to do it on. We decided to go with a couple and the boyfriend was being accused of stealing her jewellery! On the day we cast the parts and sorted it all out. I was the floor manager for the day and I had to listen to what Sarah was saying and tell everyone on set! This was a brilliant opportunity to do something different, the video was hilarious and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Jump Zone
As part of a way to improve the girls bonding in Ty the teachers very kindly took us to jump zone. We arrived in jump zone and bounced on the trampoline. To warm up we did a huge race where Maisie back flipped to injury, luckily she was ok. We then went to the basketball and foam pit fighting game. The foam pit fighting was two people on a narrow rod trying to hit people off with large foam polls. After this we played dodgeball which got very intense..... We then did jumping into foam pits. To end the fantastic day we stopped in Mac Donalds on the way back. This day really helped bringing all the girl together.
Public Access To Law
On Friday the 10th of November I had a Public Access to Law workshop. This took place in the pavilion for the duration of the day. While doing this we learned how important evidence is to lawyers and also that it makes it easier for the police to solve the case. In the afternoon we did two mock trials, I was a member of the jury in both. This meant I had to listen to what was being said and decide on whether the accused was guilty or innocent. This course was very beneficial and we all learnt a lot about lawyers.
Boxing
This year in the second group I took part in a boxing module that went on for six weeks. During this six week module I learnt many skills on how to defend myself. The first week we learnt the basic punches and footwork this being a left and right jab and stepping back and moving forward while protecting your face. The next week we learnt how to do an uppercut and roll, an uppercut is hitting from below to aim for the stomach area and a roll is when a attacker is swinging for you, to do this you quickly squat and roll your head around to avoid the punch. Unfortunately due to hockey I missed two weeks of the module but I still learnt many things and will know how to protect myself!
Tag Rugby
On Thursday the 26th for the morning we went to a tag rugby tournament which we played with Loreto Dalkey and Blackrock. My team was Australia and we came third, this was a very fun morning! we also got the opportunity to play a new sport which was very enjoyable.
Martial Arts
On Monday and Tuesday of the last week of term we took part in a Martial Arts course. On Monday we firstly had a practical lesson where we learned how to react to situations before resulting to physical defence .
In the afternoon Daragh taught us many different types of punches that we could use for self defence and we practised them against a bag. Daragh then taught us the basics of a 'take down' during a fight and how to control someone on the ground. He then showed us how to react if someone was kicking us if we were lying down, by rolling and tackling them. At the end of the day we got the opportunity to do floor fighting which is a lot harder than it looks
On Tuesday we built on our skills of 'take downs' and punches. we also learned more techniques of fighting against an attacker who is sitting on you or standing above you. Luckily we also did a short boxing module where we learned the basics of boxing and kicking. in the afternoon we learned how to defend against weapons like knives or guns.
The last thing we did was a fitness test of sorts. we had to do all our punches fifty times each, 20 combos, five interceptions, 10 burpees, 20 squats, 20 pushups and eight sprints. This was fairly challenging but showed how physical a rea fight would be.
This was an amazing opportunity and our safety has been increased I really enjoyed this.

First Aid
On the first day we learned the basics of how to know if someone needs first aid and what type they need. The basics were a head to toe check to try and figure out where they’ve been injured. Once we know this we can roll them into the recovery position, this is the best position for someone especially if they are going to be sick. The only time you don't move them is if there is a risk or neck or spinal injury. In the afternoon we learnt two basic hand bandages for cuts in different areas of the hand, to finish we learnt how to do a support sling and a basic sling, these can be used for any type of arm injury.
On Tuesday, we focused on CPR and learned how to give CPR and the correct method, we also were given face masks to do a mouth to mouth with. We were taught to open the airway give two breaths and then thirty compressions and to repeat this up to four times. We then did a lesson on burns and how to treat the three different types of burns. We also did revision of all we had done on Monday to prepare for the exam on Wednesday.
The last day we did revision all morning and then we did all the bandages, slings and CPR we had learned, little did we know this was our practical exam, but luckily everyone did well. We lastly did our written exam of thirty questions. Every-one seemed to do well and we will soon receive certificates.
