Peter Mcverry talk
On Wednesday the 15th of November we had a YSI talk with Frances Doherty. He talked about how their goal as a business is to shut down and therefore end homelessness. He also told us that a good way for us to become involved into trying to help would be to find empty homes that could be remodelled and people could move into them.
SVP Hamper Packing
Coming up to Christmas we were lucky to take part in packing hampers for St.Vincent De Paul, a brilliant cause. To do this we had to gather all the food in the sports hall making sure we had the correct amounts so no ones hamper was missing anything. We then carefully placed it into the hampers and the fith years delivered to the families who were in need of them.
Dignity Bags for Tiglin
This year as part of our YSI we worked with Tiglin in the making of dignity bags. All the years in school brought in different things that people need and we were lucky with the generosity and were able to make hundreds of the bags for Tiglin to give out. It was such an amazing thing to be able to do, to hopefully make a difference in someone's life.
Bazar Bake Sale for Tiglin
For the bazar we did a bake sale for Tiglin as part of YSI. We spent all day decorating posters and making sweet bags to sell. We had so many cakes thanks to all the first years and fourth years. It was all going towards our dignity bags and we had a fantastic amount of stuff.
Carolling in Town
The YSI group went carolling to St. Stephens Green to raise money for Peter Mc Verry. As the school carol service was on a few days later no one who was part of the choir could go and well we weren't the best sounding choir..... Despite not sounding brilliant our energy came through and we raised a lo of money for a fantastic cause.
YSI Speak Out
On the Friday before Easter we took part in the YSI speak out in Dun Laoghaire.
The YSI group had prepared for this for roughly two weeks, some of the girls and i also came up with the concept to show the judges and other groups what we were trying to do. Our idea consisted of showing the negative and judgemental thoughts towards homeless people. To do this we had 3 student pose as homeless people we then had half the class dress in dark colours to represent the negative thoughts towards homelessness and the other half dress in light colours to represent people who understand and try to help and do not judge. As each person in dark colours walked past we used signs to represent their thoughts. Each homeless person then told their story and what had happened to them. On hearing their stories the people in dark colours changed to light colours to show how spreading their stories, will encourage people not to judge but to support them. After this Ben and Lily Kate talked about what fundraising we had done. We haven't received the results yet but we feel we have done well.
